Secretariat Visits Geresdlak – Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture 2027

Today, coordinator of Finno-Ugric Capitals of Culture programme Oliver Loode visited Geresdlak in order to support the organising team with planning the cultural capital year.

The day included visits to Geresdlak’s tourist attractions – like the gingerbread village that is famous all over Hungary – as well as venues for Geresdlak’s Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture programme. Geresdlak village council is approaching the cultural capital year as a long-term investment in the socio-economic development of the village, and is seeking funds to establish a permanent House of Finno-Ugric Culture. Geresdlak’s authorities also understand the potential role that Geresdlak can play in strengthening trilateral Finno-Ugric cooperation between Hungary, Finland and Estonia, and are taking proactive steps in this direction.

One of the highlights of the day was a meeting with the representatives of Geresdlak’s vibrant Finnish community. Finns of Geresdlak are one of the key reasons why Geresdlak decided to apply for the title of Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture 2027, and why it was selected for the title. It was inspiring to hear how actively Geresdlak’s Finnish community is planning to contribute to the cultural capital year.

One example of Geresdlak’s creative approach to the cultural capital year is that the local kindergarten will be holding several Finno-Ugric themed events for its kids during the year, making them active participants of the programme.

Planning for the year is in full swing also in the Geresdlak Village Council, as the meetings with Deputy Mayor Csaba Fischer and Secretary Viktória Fischerné Faragó ndemonstrated. The Finno-Ugric world can look forward to a lively and memorable year.
It is a good time to start making plans for visiting Geresdlak in 2027. Visit Geresdlak’s dedicated website for the cultural capital year for more information.
