He explains how it will work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a framework of events that will take place across the 12 months of 2026,\u201d Barnett said. \u201cWe know the Juhannus and Heikinpaiva and all these events are on the books and those will be amplified and there will be other opportunities for individuals. Whether it is Estonian or Hungarian heritage, we will try to broaden this appeal for some of these events.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Iron Mountain Daily News<\/strong>: &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ironmountaindailynews.com\/news\/local-news\/2025\/06\/hancock-receives-finno-ugric-capital-of-culture-designation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hancock receives Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture designation<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Honorary Consul of Finland and Chairman of Copper Country Finns and Friends Jim Kurtti was pleased with the designation. \u201cI\u2019m thrilled it\u2019s happening,\u201d Kurtti said. \u201cThe people in the Uralic Centre recognized Hancock as a pes\u00e4paikka, or the nesting place for Finns and the first one in North America that is not on their historic soils like Finland and Estonia. Barnett said the distinction was a once in a lifetime opportunity for Hancock and the broader Keweenaw community to really shine at an international level when it comes to promoting, sharing and cultivating its Finnish-American heritage.<\/p>\n<p>Barnett believes Hancock selected as the 2026 Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture will continue to distinguish the region as a cultural tourist destination. He expanded on this and said businesses and organizations in the region can capitalize on this and make announcements to spread the word of the city\u2019s designation and do something special related to the naming. Barnett suggested things like special food events or new dining menu options.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>WOLF Radio (Houghton)<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewolf.com\/2025\/06\/26\/hancock-named-as-the-2026-finno-ugric-capital-of-culture-opens-opportunities-to-meet-new-communities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hancock named as the 2026 Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture opens opportunities to meet new communities<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Starting next year Hancock will open the year as the cultural capital of\u00a0Finno-Ugric\u00a0languages with the city\u2019s Heikinpaiva festival.
