Goals

Since its inception in 2013, the programme of Finno-Ugric Capitals of Culture has served three key goals:

  • To contribute towards the preservation and development of Finno-Ugric peoples, languages and cultures

  • To strengthen the common Finno-Ugric identity among Finno-Ugric peoples worldwide, and

  • To provide opportunities for sustainable cultural, social and economic development in regions that hold the title of Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture

A unique aspect of the Finno-Ugric Capitals of Culture programme is its local focus and intention to provide tangible and sustainable benefits from the status of Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture to title-holders, both during the cultural capital year and after it.

Over the past decade, we have witnessed remarkable success stories among Finno-Ugric Capitals of Culture with respect to sustainable development. For some, like the first Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture Bygy (Udmurtia), the title became a springboard for developing cultural tourism, leading to additional income for its residents and building a strong place brand. For others, like
Abja-Paluoja (Estonia) the cultural capital year started new traditions that continue to this day. And for many Finno-Ugric Capitals of Culture the title helped secure additional resources for investments in infrastructure – from new roads to renovations of community centres.

However, the title of Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture itself does not guarantee any of these benefits. A lot depends on the local community – its enthusiasm, ability to work together in the name of a common goal and also the support of local, regional and national authorities.

We invite you to familiarise yourself with the experiences of Finno-Ugric Capitals of Culture to date – perhaps this could also be an opportunity for your city, town or village?
